I recently wrote about praying scripture because there are so many wonderful verses, prayers, and songs in the BIble that we can actually connect with and use to express our thoughts. Since God’s Word is a lamp unto our feet (Psalm 119:105), we should use it! In my last blog post, 10 Things to Pray When You don’t Know What to Say, my first reference was to pray a prayer of praise. (Try saying that 10 times fast!)
Here are 5 references to scriptures, each including a prayer I have written that is inspired by those verses.
*Hover over reference to see actual scripture.
“I sing for joy to You, Lord! You are the rock of my salvation. I come before you with a thankful heart! You Lord are a great God and a great King above all gods. You hold the entire world from the bottom of the sea to the highest mountain, Lord, You made it all! I bow down before You and I worship You, our Maker!”
“I give thanks to You, Lord, and sing praises to Your name, you are Most High! I will declare Your lovingkindness by day and Your faithfulness by night with music and song. For you, Lord, have made me glad by all that You have done. I will sing for joy at the works of Your hands!”
“Praise the Lord, O my soul! With every part of me, praise His holy name! Praise the Lord, O my soul and forget none of His blessings! You forgive, You heal, You redeem us from the lowest places, and You crown us with lovingkindness and compassion. You bless us with good things so that our youth is renewed like the eagles. You make everything right and help the oppressed. You revealed Your ways to Moses and to the sons of Israel. You are merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and full of love. You do not bear down on us or stay angry, You do not treat me according to my sins or punish me for them. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is Your lovingkindness toward those who fear You. As far as the east is from the west, so far have You removed our sins from us. Just as a father has compassion on his children, so You, Lord, have compassion on those who fear You. You know us from the inside out and remember that we are only dust. Our lives are not long, we flourish like flowers in a field, but when the wind blows over them, they are gone and the ground no longer remembers their place. But Your lovingkindness is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear You and Your righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep Your covenant and remember to obey Your instruction. You have established Your throne in Heaven and Your sovereignty rules over all. Praise the Lord, you His angels, who are mighty and perform His word, obeying His voice! Praise the Lord, all you hosts who serve Him, doing His will. Praise the Lord, all of creation in every place, Praise the Lord, O my soul!”
“I will extol You, my God, O King, and I will bless Your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless You, and I will praise Your name forever and ever. Great are You, Lord and highly to be praised! Your greatness is unsearchable. One generation will praise Your works to the next and will declare Your mighty acts! I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty and on Your wonderful works. Men will speak of the power of Your awesome acts and I will tell of Your greatness. We will all eagerly utter the memory of Your abundant goodness and will shout joyfully of Your righteousness!”
Exodus 15:1-13, 17-18 Moses’ song
“I will sing to You, Lord, for You are highly exalted; The horse and its rider coming after Moses and the Israelites You hurled into the sea. You Lord are my strength and song and You are my salvation; You are my God, and I will praise You; You are my father, God, and I will extol You. You are a warrior; The Lord is Your name. Pharaoh’s chariots and his army You cast into the sea; And his best officers were drowned in the Red Sea. The deeps cover them; Your right hand, O Lord, is majestic in power, Your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy. And in the greatness of Your excellence You overthrow those who rise up against You. You send forth Your burning anger, and it consumes them as waste. At the blast of Your nostrils the waters were piled up, the flowing waters stood up like a heap; The deeps were congealed in the heart of the sea. The enemy said they would pursue, overtake, and destroy, but You blew with Your wind and the sea covered them; they sank like lead in the mighty waters. Who is like You among the gods, O Lord? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in praises, and working wonders? You stretched out Your right hand, the earth swallowed the enemy. In Your lovingkindness You led the people whom You redeemed; In Your strength You guided them to Your holy habitation. You brought Your people and planted them in the mountain of Your inheritance, The place, Lord, which You made for Your dwelling, The sanctuary, Lord, which Your hands established. You, Lord shall reign forever and ever.”
Psalm 145:1 is one of my favorite verses and I pray it frequently. God is so worthy of our praise!!
I hope these prayers of praise will be helpful to you.
